On July 1, 2026, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) launched a pilot program called the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program.
The goal of the program is to provide easier and more affordable access to GLP-1 medications for eligible individuals, including those with Medicare Part D coverage.
Here are the key facts about Medicare’s GLP-1 Bridge program, according to CMS:
- CMS launched a pilot program called the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program on July 1, 2026.
- The program provides eligible Medicare Part D beneficiaries with access to certain GLP-1 drugs.
- The program is scheduled to end on December 31, 2027. If the program is successful, CMS could continue to expand GLP-1 access to individuals with Medicare.

Which GLP-1 Drugs Are Covered?
According to Medicare.gov, the following GLP-1 medications are covered under the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program beginning July 1, 2026:
- Foundayo (tablets)
- Wegovy (injections or tablets)
- Zepbound (KwikPen only; no single-dose vials or pens)
How Coverage Works
The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program is available nationwide, including to eligible individuals with Medicare drug coverage (Part D).
You may qualify for Medicare’s GLP-1 Bridge Program if you have Part D coverage under the following:
- Standalone Medicare drug plans (PDPs)
- Medicare Advantage (MA) coordinate care plans with drug coverage (including HMOs, HMOPOS, and
- Local and Regional PPO plans (MA-PD)
- Special Needs Plans (SNPs)
- Employer or union group waiver plans (EGWPs)
- The Limited Income Newly Eligible Transition (LI NET) program
Beneficiaries do not need to change Medicare plans to participate. Instead, eligibility is based on meeting the program’s clinical and coverage requirements.

Who is Eligible?
Regardless of Medicare coverage, GLP-1 drugs require a prescription, and healthcare providers only prescribe GLP-1 medications when they’re medically appropriate.
You must meet one of these requirements to start GLP-1 therapy and participate in the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program:
You Have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 35 or More
Individuals with a BMI of 35 or higher may be eligible for a GLP-1 prescription.
You Have a BMI of 30 to 34.99 with At Least One of the Following Conditions
- Diastolic heart failure
- Uncontrolled high blood pressure
- Chronic kidney disease at stage 3a or higher
- A previous heart attack or stroke
- Blocked arteries / peripheral artery disease with symptoms
- Prediabetes
You Have a BMI Between 27 and 29.99 with at Least One of the Following Conditions
- A previous heart attack or stroke

- Prediabetes
Who is Not Eligible?
You are not eligible for Medicare’s GLP-1 Bridge program if you fall into either of these two categories:
- You are already receiving GLP-1 drugs through your Medicare Part D coverage.
- You have type 2 diabetes, moderate-to-severe sleep apnea, or fatty liver disease.*
*If you have these conditions, you may still qualify for Medicare GLP-1 drug coverage through your ordinary Part D plan, but you are not eligible for the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program.
Other Requirements
Ultimately, your doctor or healthcare provider determines whether to prescribe GLP-1 medication to you based on your medical history, current health, and potential drug interactions.
Your doctor or healthcare provider must also certify that you’re using the GLP-1 drug as part of a lifestyle program focused on diet and exercise. Just like with non-Medicare GLP-1 drug prescriptions, you must follow some type of diet or exercise program to qualify.
How the GLP-1 Bridge Program Works
If you qualify for Medicare’s GLP-1 bridge program, then here’s what you can expect:
- Your doctor or healthcare provider sends a prescription for the covered GLP-1 drug (Foundayo, Wegovy, or Zepbound) to the pharmacy. When requested, the healthcare provider also completes a prior authorization and certifies you’re using the GLP-1 drug as part of a diet and exercise program.
- You need to provide the pharmacy with your Medicare Number or the last four digits of your Social Security Number to process your prescription.
- If your application is approved, you’ll receive a letter in the mail letting you know the GLP-1 drug is covered under the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program.
- Once your eligibility is confirmed, you’ll pay a $50 copay to the pharmacy for a one-month supply (28 or 30 days, depending on the drug).
- Your prior authorization is valid through December 31, 2027, including any refills and dose changes.
- The prior authorization does not allow you to change GLP-1 drugs without a change in the doctor’s prescription. If the doctor prescribed Foundayo, for example, and you want to try Zepbound, then you need to talk to your doctor or healthcare provider first.
How Much Does the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program Cost?
If you meet eligibility requirements, then you’ll pay a $50 copay for each one-month supply of your prescribed GLP-1 drug.
A one-month supply lasts 28 or 30 days, depending on the drug.
This payment does not count toward your yearly Medicare drug plan deductible or out-of-pocket limit, nor will it appear on your Medicare Part D Explanation of Benefits (EOB) or Medicare Summary Notice.
And, because the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program is separate from ordinary Medicare drug coverage, the copay can’t be lowered by programs like Extra Help, nor can it be spread across multiple months using the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan.
